The principal goal of the research was to develop and apply new molecular microbiological approaches to assist efforts in defining the causes of poor water quality at two beaches in NSW - Terrigal Beach and Rose Bay. Samples from stormwater drains and seawater samples at each site were analysed using a suite of assays targeting microbial indicators of human, bird and dog faecal material as well as microbial markers for anthropogenic impact and urban waste-water infrastructure.
